Summer flower show, Bangalore

In summer, every year the Bangalore botanical garden at Lalbagh conduct a flower show , especially around Indian independence day. The three to four days- long flower show attracts tourists from around the southern part of India and a spectacular one. The event is jointly organised by Department of Horticulture and Mysore Horticulture Society of India, and  has been one of the most awaited events in the Garden City.

 

 

The 2016 Republic Day edition of Lalbagh flower show was the 203rd flower show, expressing a long tradition of gardening  and  love for nature. This year the flower show had 200 varieties of flowers and 20,000 pots for decoration. Over half a million visitors came to see this famous flower show.

This year, the theme of the show has been the replica of Indian parliament house , made entirely of flowers, specially red roses. The ticket is quite cheap, 1EUR per head. The flowers remained rejuvenated by constant spraying of water through the thin pipelines high up the glasshouse, very cleverly put.

 

 

 

 

The aim of the show is not only to entertain the citizens of Bangalore, but to to educate people about the variety of flora in India and develop public interest in plant conservation and cultivation. This year’s Republic Day National Flower Festival at Lalbagh has been  historic because it had been restricted to participants from Karnataka till date. But this year, the authorities have allowed the states of   Goa, Maharashtra and several from the North East, to showcase their native flowers.

 

 

 

 

Not only different species of  floral plants are displayed, but many small traders across the nearby states have come to expand their business. So, many shops selling garden accessories, pots , small gardens , seeds, honey from beehives, organic soaps and cosmetics , wooden kitchenwares and key rings have gathered around the central exhibition. Certainly, a great treat for the gardeners . I bought a small pot for my cactus, wooden table spoon and very cute key rings. For those, who cannot walk the vast garden area, small carriages are also available to take them near the attraction. If you are around during August in Bangalore, the flower show is definitely worth visiting.
