The most common theory of the origin of Brussels’ name is that it derives from the Old Dutch Broekzeleor Broeksel, meaning marsh (broek) and home (zele / sel) or “home in the marsh”. Most of the travellers opt for Bruges or Antwerp, while in Belgium, but we headed for Brussels as it was on our way from Amsterdam to Paris and basically we got a  cheaper transport. Read our unique story of travelling  to Bx from Amsterdam here .  Maybe I will go back for Bruges some day, but right now I am not regretting choosing Brussels .DSC07996

The best way to know a city is always  by walking , as I feel. We walked a lot through the financial district, and to the grand place. The square is dominated by the Flamboyant Town Hall, the Neo-Gothic Breadhouse and the Baroque guildhalls. Other landmarks in the centre include the St. Michael and Gudula Cathedral, the Royal Palace and the Palace of Justice.Bx is the mixture of modern architecture with old european town charm. Old city is a must, as most of the museums are right there, so do the alleys and narrow streets filled with many restaurants and chocolate shops.

When we visited Bx , summer fest was going on. It is a great experience savouring the food, local culture, music and way of life. There are many food stalls around the main stage, which is actually built on a main street.  Surprisingly, asian stalls are most crowded and they do serve nice hot combos at lower price. In the evening, the whole city starts pouring up near the streets around the stages, according to their favourite genre / bands  and a major portion of traffic comes to a halt.

Since the end of the Second World War, Brussels has been a major centre for international politics and has become the polyglot home of numerous international organizations, politicians, diplomats and civil servants. Brussels is the de facto capital of the European Union along with The secretariat of the Benelux and the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
