I have to go back to Salzburg, you know ! One day… actually 8 hours is not sufficient 😦 When we finished residenzpalace, gallery, cabinet of curiosity , the church, the castle by the lift to the mountain , it was already around 4.30 and almost all other museum were closing. Even we did not make upto Mirabell palace or Hellburn palace . K was grumbling as I went to the castle and he was not able to see the museums… and he only wanted to go to the zoo and that also even not done …

Poor K, I thought I would do something to make it upto him. Really, I visited what I wanted , he should also get a chance. Then suddenly, the salzburg guide caught my eye, “You can also visit the zoo at night every Friday and Saturday in August. This gives you the chance to experience the life and bustle of our animals at nighttimes until 11:00 p.m. (last admission at 09:30 p.m” And it was a Saturday !!! Yahoo….

We knew bus 25 goes to the zoo. He saw those details enthusiastically previous day, except did not see the night zoo part . Now he was really happy. And I also thought it is worth a visit 😀 So, we caught the bus and it went and went through the town. At last, very far from the town, it dropped us in a place where both side of the street has only corn fields and after the field blue Alpine mountains with white caps of cloud. No other human being, no house and nothing. There are signs to not blow the horn as it will disturb the animals. We saw the sign of Tiergarten Hellbrunn” meaning the zoo and followed through..

First we saw the reindeer, this is the second time I saw them after Sweden. Then, we saw the house goat, the alpine goat and the Alpaka. K was beaming like a baby, which one thing you do not see often 🙂

Then we moved and saw the house mouse and Gämse which is a goat- antelope genus from European Alps. There are baby carriages in the zoo and a couple with their baby were also there. Also, a cute Eurasian river otter was trying to sleep, obviously disturbed by its visitors. We humans are too cruel , I guess. Anyway, we moved quickly.

We saw the bears, they were playing with each other and there was a small baby, too. The red panda, which I have also seen in Darjeeling, Himalayan mountain was also trying to sleep, so we don’t made a stop nearby. Only clicked a photo using zoom from a distance. Here, I saw a new animal Tapir I have only read about, in the African safari adventure books.

There were a jaguar and a puma in same space and we spend some time to see their movements and activities. Though I do not find it enchanting seeing caged animals, one thing is very good in Salzburg zoo, they tried to protect the mountains and provided as much natural environment as possible to the zoo-inmates.

Maned wolf is the largest canid of South America. Its markings resemble those of foxes, but it is not a fox, nor is it a wolf, as it is not closely related to other canids.

Przewalski’s horse or Dzungarian horse, is a rare and endangered subspecies of wild horse (Equus ferus) native to the steppes of central Asia. At one time extinct in the wild , it has been reintroduced to its native habitat in Mongolia at the Khustain Nuruu National Park, Takhin Tal Nature Reserve, and Khomiin Tal. I hope the zoo authority is taking great care of this precious horse here.
We were supposed to catch a prebooked bus from Salzburg hauptbahnhof at 8 but it was already 6.40. And we were at a place looked like far end. We still did not see the rhino , the lion and the zebra. But we ran to the bus stop. And then I saw it, next bus at 7.25pm. I started grumbling we are gonna miss the bus to Munich. But, at the same time, I was longing to stay at that quite serene place, miles away from madding crowd with golden sunset behind the blue Alps.
K thought we can get a lift to the station except nobody gave us one 😦 Then luckily a cab pulled off, and he gave us a ride to the station for 15 euro. He was a nice person, we talked a lot about travelling, restaurants in Salzburg and a little bit about ourselves. He was upset as he was waiting a divorce ! We felt he still loves his wife very much and while coming back home, I prayed, they reconcile .

Love to go to zoos, as long as the animals look healthy and have decent habitats. The jaguar in your photos looks especially impressive.

Great pictures.
The animals you can’t name are capybaras. They’re the biggest and cutest rodents in South America.

Aren’t zoos strange places? Chamois and Alpine Ibex–those are also in a zoo near where I live.
