A winter morning in Vigeland park, Oslo

Oslo’s Vigeland Park, is the largest sculpture park in the world by a single artist, boasting over 212 pieces made from bronze and granite by Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland.  The sculptor’s stone statue is also crafted in the immediate south of the park. Vigeland lived and worked at his studio until his death and his ashes are still preserved there in the belfry of the building, which has become Vigeland museum now.

We highly recommend  this park if you love art and sculpture. It is unique, has free entry, opens 24 hours and easily accessible from the city by tram 12. Single journey costs 56 NOK, so 56×2 = 112 NOK for both ways.  Oslo ruter transport card for 24 hours is better, convenient & cheaper way to visit the park from city centre. It costs 108 NOK  for adults and valid in all public transports for 24 hours in zone 1.

The monolith

At the highest point in Frogner Park lies the park’s most popular attraction, the Monolith. It is a genuine monolith, being fabricated from one piece of solid stone. Construction of the massive monument began in 1924 when Gustav Vigeland modelled it in clay in his studio in Frogner. The design process took ten months.
