The Musée zoologique de la ville de Strasbourg or natural history museum of the city of Strasbourg is among top 5 museums in Strasbourg. It is managed and curated by the University of Strasbourg. In 1802, the city of Strasbourg purchased all of the natural history collections of Johann Hermann. Later in 1872, the management and curation of the museum was entrusted to University of Strasbourg. A spacious new building was erected from 1890-93 for the museum. The museum has collections of 18,000 birds,2,450 fish, 1,350,000 invertebrates and 1,000,000 insects, with a very particular focus on Alsatian fauna. There is also a reconstruction of Johann Hermann’s study, containing many documents and specimens of his time.
Situated in 29 boulevard de la Victoire, the museum is accessible all year around from Wednesday till Monday from 10 am -6 pm, tuesday being the weekly closing day. Adults needs a ticket of 6.5EUR, students / elderly 3.5EUR. For children below 18, the entry is free. As Strasbourg is in the province Alsace, the endangered environments in Alsace: the Higher Vosges Mountains, the Rhine forest, the Ried can be explored in this museum. Take tram C or E or F to reach the museum, for around 7 EUR, 3 people can travel unlimited for a whole day.
