Parc Güell , Barcelona

Parc Güell is a must see in Barcelona. And I suggest you to go there for an excellent panoramic view of the city. You can by metro or bus. But if you go by metro, you have to walk quite a lot. Bus drops you just in front of the gate of the park. The park is UNESCO world heritage site.

 

You may take Bus 24 from Parallel metro or 90 from Hospital de Sant Pau.

 

 

Colonnaded pathway  is an unique  architechture, where the road projects out from the hillside, with the vaulting forming a retaining wall  which curves over to support the road, and transmits the load onto sloping columns.

  

 

The outside park does not need any ticket. Only the monument area needs ticket, which is 7 euro. The park is a public park system composed of gardens and architectonic elements located on Carmel Hill. Carmel Hill belongs to the mountain range of Collserola. Eusebi Guell  assigned the design of the park to  Gaudi,  father of catalan modernism. The park was built between 1900 and 1914 and was officially opened as a public park in 1926.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Gaudí’s multicolored mosaic salamander, popularly known as “el drac” meaning the dragon, at the main entrance, as restored after the vandalism of February 2007 (above). There are many small replica are available in the souvenir shops and street side stalls. The roof and the walls contain Gaudí’s unique tiles.

 

The park also contain the Gaudi House museum.

The unique shape of the serpentine bench enables the people sitting on it to converse privately, although the square is large. The bench is tiled and in order to dry up quickly after it rains, and to stop people from sitting in the wet part of the bench, small bumps were installed by Gaudí.

 

 

 

 

 

 

More than the park, I loved the cross above the hill, where you can enjoy the panoramic view  of the city. The park supports a wide variety of wildlife, notably several of the non-native species of parrots from Barcelona area. Other birds can be seen from the park, like  short toed eagle.. The park also supports a population of hummingbird hawk moths.

 

 

 

 

From the hill, the view of Cosmocaxia and the Barcelona space observatory can be seen. We wanted to go there, but no one was able to guide about the direction.
